Hidden Gems in Tuscany, Italy: Unusual Things to do in Tuscany

Someone recently asked me, "Are there any hidden gems left in Tuscany?".

The answer is an enthusiastic "YES!". There are still plenty of hidden gems and unusual things to do in Tuscany. It’s a paradise for off-the-beaten-path travelers!

Tuscany is the most well-known region of Italy for Americans and other nationalities as well. The vast majority of visitors head to Florence, as well as Val d'Orcia and Chianti, leaving most of the region unexplored.

Today I'm unveiling a few sub-regions of Tuscany that are still rich with hidden gems worth exploring– without the crowds! If you’re seeking a more authentic and cultural experience in Italy, take note of the 5 areas below:

Hidden Gems in Tuscany, Italy: Maremma

Green landscape of Maremma, one of the hidden gems in Tuscay Italy

An off the beaten path coastal region of western Tuscany, the Maremma area lies along the Tyrrhenian Sea and offers a unique blend of unspoiled nature, rich history, and authentic Italian charm. Far from the crowds of Florence and Siena, Maremma’s hidden gems are scattered amongst rolling hills, vineyards, and pristine beaches. Its medieval towns like Pitigliano and Sorano, along with ancient Etruscan ruins, give a glimpse into Tuscany’s past.

Among the more unusual things to do in Maremma, Tuscany, is a visit to Maremma Regional Park, where wild horses roam free. A culinary highlight of this off the beaten path area in Tuscany is acquacotta, a hearty vegetable and bread soup, traditionally made by local shepherds. Maremma is also known for its alabaster carving, an ancient craft passed down through generations. The region is steeped in the unique culture of the butteri, Italy’s traditional cowboys, who still herd cattle on horseback, keeping alive Maremma’s centuries-old rural traditions.

Hidden Gems in Tuscany, Italy: Garfagnana

Garfagnana, tucked away in the rugged mountains of northern Tuscany, is an area abundant with true hidden gems, offering dramatic landscapes and a deep connection to nature. Nestled between the Apuan Alps and the Apennines, this verdant region is ideal for those seeking tranquil forests, hiking trails, and picturesque villages. Known for its rich agricultural heritage, Garfagnana produces the beloved farro della Garfagnana, a hearty ancient grain used in soups, salads, and rustic dishes.

Garfagnana also preserves the culture of its carbonai, traditional charcoal burners who once lived in the forests and produced charcoal through a laborious, time-honored process. Barga is one of the most off the beaten path and picturesque villages in Tuscany. For unusual things to do in Tuscany, plan to attend Le Piazzette, an event every July/August in which the town’s small squares transform into stages for live music, food stalls, and art, creating a magical atmosphere that showcases local culture.

Casentino is an unexplored area of Tuscany and a hidden gem that offers stunning natural beauty and a rich cultural heritage, particularly known for its impressive castles. Surrounded by the lush Casentino forests as well as Monte Falterona and Campigna National Park, this region is perfect for those seeking tranquil hikes and off the beaten path villages. The landscape is dotted with medieval castles, such as the Castello di Poppi, renowned for its well-preserved architecture and breathtaking views of the valley, and the Castello di Romena, which offers fascinating insights into the region's feudal history.

These historic fortifications provide a glimpse into the past and are often surrounded by lush greenery, making them ideal for exploration. Casentino is also famous for its pecorino cheese, a delicious sheep's milk cheese that is a staple of local cuisine. The tradition of wood carving is still alive there, with artisans creating beautiful sculptures and functional items from local wood. If you’re looking for unusual things to do in Tuscany, you should immerse yourself in the unique culture of the region by exploring the historic castles, which are often linked to local legends and tales of knights

Hidden Gems in Tuscany, Italy: Mugello

Mugello, a lesser-known region in northern Tuscany, is a hidden gem known for its tranquil landscapes, ancient stone villages, and world-famous race track. Mugello offers a serene escape with rolling hills, sunflower fields, lush forests, and charming villages. The area is home to remarkable medieval fortifications, such as the Castello di Trebbio, a beautifully restored castle with panoramic views and a fascinating history tied to the Medici family, and the Castello di Villanova, which showcases impressive architecture.

For unusual things to do in Tuscany, head to the village of Scarperia, known since medieval times as THE place to go for handmade knives. You’ll also find Palazzo dei Viccari, a fortress where the vicar held a seat of power extending from Florence. Mugello is also renowned for its traditional crafts, including ceramics and textiles, reflecting the region's artisanal heritage. Visitors can enjoy local specialties like tortelli di patate, a delicious potato-filled pasta. For those looking for a deeper experience...

Elba Island, the largest of the Tuscan Archipelago, is a hidden gem that offers a unique blend of stunning natural beauty, rich history, and vibrant culture. Known for its crystal-clear waters and picturesque beaches, Elba is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts, with opportunities for hiking, snorkeling, and sailing along its rugged coastline. The island is also famous for its historical significance as the site of Napoleon Bonaparte's exile, with landmarks like the Villa dei Mulini and the Villa San Martino providing insight into his life during this period. The charming towns of Portoferraio and Capoliveri are filled with colorful buildings, quaint shops, and delicious restaurants serving local seafood and wines.

The Tuscan Archipelago is not only celebrated for its stunning landscapes but also for its thriving artisanal crafts, including ceramics and coral jewelry. Visitors can savor local specialties like schiaccia briaca, a traditional sweet bread, while enjoying the relaxed island atmosphere. Many Tuscans head to Elba Island for an easy getaway in June, July, and August. To avoid the crowds, many travelers prefer to visit in the shoulder seasons of May and September, when the weather is still pleasant, but the tourist numbers are significantly lower.
